?Is it still correct to use ?Dear Sir or Madam? in a cover letter?? a reader asked in an e-mail.
?That isn?t such a great idea,? I wrote back. ?No one uses ?Dear Sir or Madam? anymore, unless they?re actually writing to a madam, such as Heidi Fleiss.? I?m not sure my e-mail correspondent caught the joke.
It?s not that using out-of-date job-search approaches brands you as older. Rather, it?s that using no-longer-in-fashion job search techniques marks you as out of touch.
Employers pay us, in part, to be aware of trends and phenomena that affect the workplace. Working people (and job-seekers) should follow the news, keep a bead on our changing world, and stay abreast of changes in business, technology, politics, and cultural shifts. That isn?t an unreasonable expectation. If a job-seeker isn?t curious and perceptive enough to notice that the last time he saw ?Dear Sir or Madam? on a letter was around the time Chevy Chase impersonated Gerald Ford falling down the stairs, how will he notice what?s changing in his field?
Here are five formerly useful, now dangerous job-search approaches that hark back to an earlier age. Get them out of your job-search repertoire, pronto.
1. Dedicated R?sum? Paper and Envelopes. Don?t use nubbly beige or pink or stone-grey r?sum? paper, or any other kind of special paper or matching envelopes, in your job search. Dedicated-use r?sum? paper is a 1980s artifact. Most of your r?sum?s will reach employers electronically, in which case the employer will print it out. For r?sum?s you print on your own, use plain white bond paper. (If you want to use a heavier stock than usual, do it.) Keep r?sum? formatting simple. 2. Creaky Cover Letter Language. When I read ?Dear Sir or Madam,? I instantly get a picture of a person wearing white gloves and carrying tiny mother-of-pearl opera glasses in her handbag. Don?t get me wrong?I have opera glasses and I wish white gloves were still in style. They?re not. Never use ?Dear Sir or Madam??or its cousin, ?To Whom It May Concern??in a cover letter for the same reason. In 2012, companies are porous. We can find our hiring manager?s name in two seconds using LinkedIn. We are obliged to try: Correspondence that begins ?To Whom It May Concern? means death to a job search. ?Dear Hiring Manager? is just as bad. Find the name of the relevant person or lob a r?sum? into the Black Hole and skip the cover letter altogether.
3. Here?s Why You Should Hire Me. People get hired when a hiring manager believes, intellectually and emotionally, that the person sitting in front of him or her can do the job. It isn?t a linear process. That?s not great news to people who believe that power comes from their degrees and certifications because those folks are often more comfortable pushing their skills out in front of them than sitting and talking with a manager in a way that inspires confidence and trust. But tons of job-search books and articles nonetheless encourage job-seekers to grovel and beg, as though any manager has ever been convinced of an applicant?s heft and power by hearing the applicant say: ?Please hire me?I?ll do anything you want!?
Groveling doesn?t work, which is why compiling and mailing goofy lists such as ?here are 10 reasons you should hire me? are terrible things to do. When we write a post-interview thank-you note or e-mail, we should use it to continue the substantive conversation that started during a job interview, not to mewl and beg for a job. We never, ever want to construct lists of reasons an employer should hire us. We won?t convince anyone of our value that way. If the reasons to hire don?t come through in an interview, you?ve already missed the boat.
4. Endless Bullets. It used to be the thing to create long lists of bullets following each job listed in your r?sum?. Nowadays, time and attention are in short supply. Limit yourself to two or three bullets for each of your past jobs. A short, bulleted point that tells the reader what you?ve gotten done in your career and how you roll??When our two biggest rivals merged, I launched a grass-roots e-mail marketing campaign that ramped sales 20 percent??beats the heck out of long lists of tasks and duties or general statements like ?solved tricky customer service issues.? Use your r?sum? to tell your story. Give it a human voice, a breezy tone, and quick, pithy stories to bring your power across on the page. No one cares about your daily tasks. (Most of us can extrapolate those from your job titles, anyway.)
5. Gratuitous Research. I warn job-seekers about the Hermione Granger Effect, the tendency for eager job-seekers to try to win gold stars from hiring managers for their teacher?s-pet-type preparation, research, and general submissiveness. Sure, it?s always appropriate to learn about the companies you?re targeting for your job search, and LinkedIn, ZoomInfo, Glassdoor.com, and other company-research sites make that task easier. Your research has value for what it tells you about your next employer?s business situation, recent changes, and competitive challenges.
Still, the last thing you want to do as a job-seeker is seek brownie points by whipping out a file folder full of clippings at an interview or by saying, ?I spent the weekend researching your company.? That?s groveling. You should act as a consultant and business adviser during a job search. Do whatever research you need to do?and keep quiet about it. If you ask a pithy, research-fueled question like ?What?s your take on the Acme Explosives-Toontown Motors merger? That?s got to be having some ripple effects for your firm,? you?re advancing a business conversation, not trying to get a pat on the head.
Watch out for these five destructive job-search practices, and you?ll be unstoppable. A wise individual once told me: ?When people are in themselves fully, they?re larger than life.? Get out of your head, show up on a job search to experience the moment, and see what great things result.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It took 24 witnesses over 19 days of testimony for prosecutors to make their case against Roger Clemens, with three jurors and two minor pieces of the indictment dismissed by the time they were done. With the overlong-running trial now in its seventh week and Clemens' lawyers starting to take their turn, the case remains centered on the credibility of one person ? Brian McNamee.
The government rested Tuesday in the perjury trial of the seven-time Cy Young Award winner, wrapping up with a witness from Wall Street and two from the FBI. Two invoked the name of McNamee, the longtime Clemens strength coach who says he injected the ex-pitcher with steroids in 1998, 2000 and 2001 and with human growth hormone in 2000.
The defense is expected to take about two weeks to call its witnesses. The trial has already exceeded the original estimate of four to six weeks stated by the judge at the start of jury selection.
Clemens is charged with two counts of perjury, three counts of making false statements and one count of obstruction of Congress. All relate to his testimony at a hearing in February 2008 and his deposition that preceded it.
The heart of the case is the allegation that Clemens lied when he said he had never used steroids or HGH, but the obstruction count included 15 statements, or "acts," in which Clemens is alleged to have misled Congress on a variety of issues. U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton dismissed two of those acts Tuesday.
The first dismissed act dealt with Clemens' claim that he had "no idea" that former Sen. George Mitchell wanted to talk with him in preparation for the 2007 Mitchell Report on drugs in baseball. The government couldn't prove otherwise because some of its evidence was ruled inadmissible due to rules over attorney-client privilege.
The second dismissed act deals with Clemens' statement in his 2008 deposition that: "I couldn't tell you the first thing about (HGH)." The judge said that statement could be misinterpreted because it was asked in the context of whether Clemens had ever done any research into HGH.
Thirteen alleged misleading statements remain in the charges. The government only needs to prove one to gain a conviction for obstruction of Congress.
There's something the trial definitely can't afford to keep losing: jurors. Two have been dismissed for sleeping during the proceedings, and a third was lost Tuesday following the death of her mother. There's only one alternate left.
"So I'd ask everybody to stay healthy and available," Walton told the remaining 13. Many of them smiled or laughed.
One of the government's final witnesses was Anthony Corso, one of McNamee's so-called "Wall Street clients" who worked out with the strength coach in Manhattan. Corso related a pair of conversations meant to show that McNamee didn't start making up allegations and fabricating evidence against Clemens to placate federal investigators in 2007.
"Mr. McNamee had mentioned that Mr. Clemens was one of the athletes that was getting positive results from" HGH, said Corso, recalling a conversation from around 2002.
A key piece of evidence in the trial is medical waste from an alleged 2001 steroids injection of Clemens that McNamee said he saved in a beer can and FedEx box.
Corso, a large, blunt-spoken New Yorker who works as a managing partner in a consulting firm, recalled asking McNamee around 2005 about a newspaper story concerning performance-enhancing drugs.
"'I'm not going to get thrown under the bus because I've taken care of it,'" Corso remembered McNamee saying. "He said he had saved some syringes and thrown them in a beer can, and thrown them in a FedEx box."
Corso didn't directly link Clemens to that statement, a fact reinforced by a question from a juror. That forced the government to start reading Corso's grand jury testimony from two years ago, when Corso quoted McNamee as saying, "I saved two syringes that I used on Roger." Corso said he now can't recall whether McNamee used Clemens' name in connection with the syringes or not.
FBI expert Eric Pokorak then testified that the mouth of the beer can didn't contain Clemens' DNA and might have contained McNamee's, evidence that could help or hurt both sides. The beer can allegedly came from Clemens' apartment, but the government can now argue that if Clemens didn't drink the beer, then his DNA couldn't have contaminated the evidence McNamee kept inside it.
FBI toxicologist Cynthia Morris-Kukoski completed the government's case by testifying about the various types of vitamin B12. Clemens has said that he received B12 injections from McNamee ? instead of steroids or HGH.
The defense called two witnesses late in the afternoon. Former major leaguer and longtime Clemens friend Mike Capel testified about Clemens' strong work ethic. One of Clemens' former high school teammates, Todd Howey, did the same.
"I've yet to see anybody work like Roger Clemens," Howey said.
The trial has also meant a lot of hard work for Walton, who didn't take it well when Clemens lawyer Rusty Hardin mentioned that the judge was getting paid the "big bucks."
"I don't get paid big bucks," Walton said. "We haven't gotten a pay raise in 20 years. ... It's a good thing I'm married to a doctor or else I couldn't afford to do this."

NEWBERRY, Mich. (AP) ? Homes and cabins make up a third of the nearly 100 structures destroyed by a wildfire burning across more than 30 square miles of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, officials said Monday.
The lost property includes Pike Lake Resort near Pike Lake in Luce County. The Rainbow Lodge at the mouth of the Two Hearted River, one of Ernest Hemingway's favorite streams, was badly damaged.
"I was still hoping that they would stop it," Pike Lake Resort owner Diane Ricketts said of the fire. "With my husband gone, I'm not going to rebuild. We're just going to go on and take it day by day and see what's going to happen."
The Duck Lake Fire began with a lightning strike last week and burned more than 22,000 acres, or 34 square miles, but was 51 percent contained by Monday, according to the Department of Natural Resources.
Monday's firefighting effort was aided by rain ? as much as an inch per hour ? but wind and dry air caused the fire to gain momentum at the south end, said Dean Wilson, a spokesman for fire managers.
"We won't know what it will look like" until Tuesday morning, he said.
Parts of Michigan are extremely dry and thirsty for rain. Fireworks and outdoor burning have been banned in 49 of the state's 83 counties, especially in northern Michigan.
The DNR said 95 structures have been destroyed, including 34 homes or cabins. No injuries have been reported.
Fire managers gave an update to about 200 people Sunday in Newberry, the community closest to the fire, 75 miles northwest of the Mackinac Bridge. The strategy includes aircraft dumping water.
"I didn't know what to expect," said Dennis Nezich, a DNR spokesman. "People were very polite, they listened."
In Newberry, homemade signs popped up over the weekend thanking firefighters. "You Rock!!" said one. Another said, "Until every hero comes home." Some people have lined the streets to greet firefighters.
The DNR said Tahquamenon Area Girl Scouts donated $300 from a magazine recycling project to provide snacks.

Not only has he derailed a amendment to stop illegal aliens living in this country, receiving mostly fraudulent IRS child tax reimbursement, to the tune 0f 4.2 billion dollars, he has done nothing to halt the influx of foreign nationals occupying Nevada. The tired old lawmaker has guaranteed that those working in this country illegally will be sustain in receiving billions of dollars in tax reimbursement for children that are not even present in this country. He is responsible for stopping ICE from raiding the building construction sites, but clandestine inviting mass illegal aliens into the state. The TEA PARTY must adjoin to seat a new younger Senator leader in his place, as he is just one of the liberal-Democrats, involved in wrecking this country?s economic return.
By passing another Comprehensive Immigration Reform would devastate our economy. ICE prohibited programs as the Democrats Dream Act, the Sanctuary policies has its costs, to all taxpayers and further encouraging the exploitation of the American low income worker. Less enforcement also has a negative impact, as Obama administration stands down from proceeding with large scale ICE raids or the deportation of all individuals. Years of complete indifference by both political parties to securing the borders, interior ?seek and detain? has allowed large influxes of criminal illegal aliens, with many reentering time and time again. The fact that illegal alien expectant females are procuring even more billions of dollars in education and schooling for their children, if once stepping on to U.S. soil, or disguising their pregnancy when alighting from aircraft, with a design to take advantage of the ?Birthright Citizenship? law badly manipulated from its original intent.
There are obstacles in Congress by both sides of the aisle, but even so 59 bipartisan sponsors to amend this law. Similar is to mandate the very controversial E-verify bill, that instead of voluntary for businesses, so it becomes the rule of the land. That every business, no matter how large and small must authenticate their workers, showing they are eligible to work in the United States. This is a very strength of every voter, to stop the continuation of these wrongly enacted laws, to amend Birthright Citizenship, so one parent must be a U.S. citizen, by birth or naturalization. All voters must fight back and demand from your Senator or House Representative that E-verify must be implemented permanently and Birthright citizenship be amended.
Neither new law costs money, but will save absolutely billions in YOUR taxes. The controversial publicity around ?Chipotle? is typical of businesses that think they are above the law, when hiring workers. Cheap labor is for profiteers, who have no conscious hiring foreigners, when there are thousands of legal Hispanics who would in this recession; jump at a chance of a job? As an addition ?Secure Communities? is now a mandatory law, so all suspects taken into custody will have their fingerprints sent to Homeland Security and ICE. But we must push the idiots in Washington, to pass mandated E-Verify and the amendment to the Birthright Citizenship Act.
E-Verify as nationwide push of enforcement have a 98 % successful program, that detects foreign labor and unable to verify, they will start to expedite departure to their home countries. All these policies, rules and regulations is the agenda of the monumental growth of the Constitutional TEA PARTY splinter group of the Republican Party. Both entrenched parties are nervous of this rise of a national party, which they cannot control.

Canadian design firm Teknision recently announced Chameleon, which promises to be an interesting twist on Android tablet home screens. Besides having streamlined, resizeable widgets that span a bunch of third-party apps like Netflix, Twitter. Spotify, Flickr, and others, Chameleon's signature trait is its ability to automatically change modes based on its surroundings -- hence the name. By setting up certain rules, you can set up Chameleon to shift to a different home screen layout depending on the time of day, GPS location, or which Wi-Fi network you're connected to. In short, it's a smarter version of "scenes" that you might find in various manufacturer UIs.
The build that I played with here in Ottawa was still very much in development, and all of the apps being shown were canned, but the animations and transitions were definitely slick. Teknision is hoping to get outside developers interested in making their own Chameleon widgets with HTML5, but the current sampling that they cooked up with publicly available APIs is pretty sweet. It sounded like it will be a ways off before we'll see these widgets coexisting peacefully with other home screen widgets, so be prepared for an all-or-nothing affair.
Teknision previously worked on the BlackBerry PlayBook operating system which, say what you will about the app ecosystem, was very nicely designed. Most of the time, these guys work behind the scenes with partners, so it's really interesting to see them step into the limelight a bit and pump out something that's entirely their own. Here's hoping it pays off and they consider doing more slick custom work on Android.
Chameleon is due out this August, and Teknision is using Kickstarter predominantly to handle preorders and speed up the release. Right now, they're at $31k out of a $50k goal, which is due in 20 days. KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? France's president defended his decision to pull the country's 2,000 combat troops out of Afghanistan two years early, telling French soldiers stationed in the east on Friday that "the time for Afghan sovereignty has come."
While Paris will still support Kabul and keep some trainers behind, France's decision to leave ahead of other NATO allies has spawned fears that more nations in the U.S.-led coalition will withdraw early as well. A speedy withdrawal by others nations would destabilize the plan for Afghan forces to gradually take charge of the country's security over the next 2 1/2 years.
French President Francois Hollande told world leaders at a NATO summit this week in Chicago that he would not renege on his campaign promise to pull French troops out by the end of the year ? well ahead of the end of the alliance's combat mission at the close of 2014.
The French president said that while Paris will withdraw its 2,000 combat troops ? out of a total of 3,400 troops plus 150 gendarmes ? by Dec. 31, it was not renouncing all support for Afghanistan. France so far has not pledged to help bankroll the Afghan security forces beyond 2014, but Hollande said some French forces would stay behind and help train Afghan soldiers and police.
"Is this an abandonment?" Hollande asked rhetorically during a function at the French Embassy in Kabul. "No. This is a continuation, and will be a further engagement, but in a different form."
France, which has lost more than 80 soldiers in the war, is the fifth largest contributor of troops after the United States, Britain, Germany and Italy.
The United States is pulling out 23,000 troops by the end of September, on top of the 10,000 it withdrew last year.
Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, said this week that on Sept. 30 there will be 68,000 American and about 40,000 other coalition forces in Afghanistan ? compared to more than 130,000 last year.
Many European countries face disillusionment and fatigue from the decade-long war and are wrestling with their own economic crises.
In an appeal to war-weary voters in a difficult re-election campaign, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy pledged to withdraw all French troops by the end of next year. Sarkozy announced the accelerated withdrawal after four French troops were killed by a rogue Afghan soldier in January.
Hollande, who defeated Sarkozy and took office this month, made this year's pullout a pillar of his election campaign.
French military spokesman Col. Thierry Burkhard said the 2,000 troops leaving this year "conduct operations" and that those who will remain include "hundreds" of trainers, troops handling logistics for the pullout and others who help protect the French hospital, air bases and support staff. He added that defense officials were currently deciding how many would remain in each capacity.
French troops are deployed in the Surobi district of Kabul province, Kapisa province to the north of the capital and at Kandahar Air Field in the south where France has three fighter jets. Burkhard said most of the French troops will be withdrawn from Kapisa and Surobi. The French military equipment would leave Afghanistan along ground routes.
"You have carried out your mission," Hollande told French soldiers stationed in Nijrab district of Kapisa. "The terrorist threat that targeted our territory ? while it hasn't totally disappeared ? is in part lessened."
Hollande told Afghan President Hamid Karzai during a lunch meeting that trainers will continue to work with the Afghan security forces, but he did not say how long they would stay.
"Between now and the end of the year, the Afghan army will take control of the zones protected by our forces," Hollande said. The transition will be carried out "intelligently and with complete and friendly cooperation with the Afghan authorities."
The Afghan army and police have started taking charge of security in areas that are home to 75 percent of the population. The goal is for Afghan forces to be in the lead across the country by mid-2013. NATO and other foreign forces would then assume a support role for the 352,000-strong Afghan security forces until the end of 2014.
Ashraf Ghani, head of a commission overseeing the transition, said earlier this month that "the risks in Kapisa are containable and within our capability."
Mohammad Hussain Khan Sanjani, chief of provincial council in Kapisa, said the French troops were active in reconstruction, worked with the Afghan army and police and conducted patrols in Alasay and Tagab districts, the two most restive areas of the province.
"Let's wait and see," Sanjani said about the effect of the French exit. "I hope the French government will continue to pay attention to training and equipping the Afghan police and army. If they do not help us, our forces will face difficulties."
