Scientists build the first all-carbon solar cell

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? Stanford University scientists have built the first solar cell made entirely of carbon, a promising alternative to the expensive materials used in photovoltaic devices today.

The results are published in the Oct. 31 online edition of the journal ACS Nano.

"Carbon has the potential to deliver high performance at a low cost," said study senior author Zhenan Bao, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford. "To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a working solar cell that has all of the components made of carbon. This study builds on previous work done in our lab."

Unlike rigid silicon solar panels that adorn many rooftops, Stanford's thin film prototype is made of carbon materials that can be coated from solution. "Perhaps in the future we can look at alternative markets where flexible carbon solar cells are coated on the surface of buildings, on windows or on cars to generate electricity," Bao said.

The coating technique also has the potential to reduce manufacturing costs, said Stanford graduate student Michael Vosgueritchian, co-lead author of the study with postdoctoral researcher Marc Ramuz.

"Processing silicon-based solar cells requires a lot of steps," Vosgueritchian explained. "But our entire device can be built using simple coating methods that don't require expensive tools and machines."

Carbon nanomaterials

The Bao group's experimental solar cell consists of a photoactive layer, which absorbs sunlight, sandwiched between two electrodes. In a typical thin film solar cell, the electrodes are made of conductive metals and indium tin oxide (ITO). "Materials like indium are scarce and becoming more expensive as the demand for solar cells, touchscreen panels and other electronic devices grows," Bao said. "Carbon, on the other hand, is low cost and Earth-abundant."

The Bao group's all-carbon solar cell consists of a photoactive layer, which absorbs sunlight, sandwiched between two electrodes.

For the study, Bao and her colleagues replaced the silver and ITO used in conventional electrodes with graphene -- sheets of carbon that are one atom thick -and single-walled carbon nanotubes that are 10,000 times narrower than a human hair. "Carbon nanotubes have extraordinary electrical conductivity and light-absorption properties," Bao said.

For the active layer, the scientists used material made of carbon nanotubes and "buckyballs" -- soccer ball-shaped carbon molecules just one nanometer in diameter. The research team recently filed a patent for the entire device.

"Every component in our solar cell, from top to bottom, is made of carbon materials," Vosgueritchian said. "Other groups have reported making all-carbon solar cells, but they were referring to just the active layer in the middle, not the electrodes."

One drawback of the all-carbon prototype is that it primarily absorbs near-infrared wavelengths of light, contributing to a laboratory efficiency of less than 1 percent -- much lower than commercially available solar cells. "We clearly have a long way to go on efficiency," Bao said. "But with better materials and better processing techniques, we expect that the efficiency will go up quite dramatically."

Improving efficiency

The Stanford team is looking at a variety of ways to improve efficiency. "Roughness can short-circuit the device and make it hard to collect the current," Bao said. "We have to figure out how to make each layer very smooth by stacking the nanomaterials really well."

The researchers are also experimenting with carbon nanomaterials that can absorb more light in a broader range of wavelengths, including the visible spectrum.

"Materials made of carbon are very robust," Bao said. "They remain stable in air temperatures of nearly 1,100 degrees Fahrenheit."

The ability of carbon solar cells to out-perform conventional devices under extreme conditions could overcome the need for greater efficiency, according to Vosgueritchian. "We believe that all-carbon solar cells could be used in extreme environments, such as at high temperatures or at high physical stress," he said. "But obviously we want the highest efficiency possible and are working on ways to improve our device."

"Photovoltaics will definitely be a very important source of power that we will tap into in the future," Bao said. "We have a lot of available sunlight. We've got to figure out some way to use this natural resource that is given to us."

Other authors of the study are Peng Wei of Stanford and Chenggong Wang and Yongli Gao of the University of Rochester Department of Physics and Astronomy. The research was funded by the Global Climate and Energy Project at Stanford and the Air Force Office for Scientific Research.

Social Media Visibility

We live in the world of social media networks, places on the Internet where some create and share and all consume.

Number of users, millions and hundreds of millions on some networks, a billion on other, not only that provide a great way for us to instantly communicate, share, spread ideas or messages but they also enable us to create so important online visibility, one that may be important to us as individuals and businesses alike.

Part of our series on establishing online presence?

Presence on social media is now for a number of years an essential part of our (online) life?s. Our active life on social media creates already mentioned visibility. If that visibility is work related it may positively influence the bottom line. If you were ignoring their existence and postponing creation of an active presence on social media you should stop that and start creating profiles now.

Social Media Visibility

Web as a marketing tool

Positive effect your presence may have on online visibility of your business, product or service should not be ignored.

Search engines look for a new content. More often you publish, more likely they?ll as result crawl your web site more often. Keywords in your content relevant to what your audience is looking for, when performing a search, may as result have your page listed among the first ten, what gives you better chances of bringing visitors to your web site.

By sharing that same content on Twitter, Google + or Facebook page, for an example, we are reaching even further with our content, into places where potentially one simple click on Share button separates us from a large number of users who are daily engaging with ever growing number of their friends and followers.

Today, static web site may not produce a marketing results we want without a chain reaction social media visibility may help create.

You may say that you have a static web site on the Internet and this is your online marketing strategy. Sooner you realize that with it alone, it will be hard to stand out among millions, let along to end up on the first page of search results, better chances you may have to get some results from a change that will include social media.

Fresh content on your active web site should come to light as often as possible, then, it should be shared on social media networks. Once your content is out there, it can easily overflow on the other social networks that your friends may prefer to use.

While sharing your content, your interaction with almost anyone out there among one and half billion people who are using the Internet, is just another simple way of creating visibility.

First things first

When thinking about increasing an online visibility of your personal profile, business, product or a service, first step you should consider taking is, if not yet, create a blog. Blog will unable you to publish new articles quickly, add photographs, video or almost any content on your own, whenever and wherever from you want. Publish as often as possible.

To have a Blog up and running is an easy task that probably anyone out there can perform on their own. See one of the options on how it is done?

Create, Share, Follow and Like

Following step should be an account on Google+, Twitter, Facebook page for your business, Youtube, Flickr, Pinterest and any other social media platform that can serve as an extended marketing tool.

Then, just keep them alive, at least occasionally create a new content, share, like, follow and be followed, become visible.

To busy at work? No time for, at least occasional, social media presence? There may be a solution to your problem right around the corner and that may be as simple as an option to hire someone?

Western Australia Government Selects Corridor ... - LNG World News

Western Australia Government Selects Corridor for Gas Pipeline

The Western Australia State Government has selected a preferred corridor and operational model for a natural gas pipeline from Bunbury to Albany.

Premier and State Development Minister Colin Barnett and Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls announced the Bunbury to Albany gas pipeline would service Manjimup and towns along the corridor, including Donnybrook, Bridgetown and Mount Barker.

?The Bunbury to Albany gas pipeline will deliver secure, reliable and safe energy to support future economic and population growth in the South-West and Great Southern regions,? Mr Barnett said.

?As well as making reticulated natural gas schemes possible for householders along the pipeline route, it will create new opportunities for existing industries and attract new investment.?

The Premier said the pipeline would be designed, built and operated by a private sector proponent. The State Government, through Verve Energy, would retain an interest in the project in conjunction with the successful proponent.

Expressions of interest from qualified companies will be called in early to mid-November.

The successful proponent would identify an easement up to 50m wide within the corridor and be responsible for consulting and negotiating with landholders and communities, and for obtaining relevant environmental, Native Title and planning approvals.

The pipeline will have minimal impact on the environment and private land use. Although the area will be protected under the Dampier to Bunbury Gas Pipeline legislation, activities such as cropping and grazing would still be permitted on land within the easement.

Mr Grylls said the pipeline would be built with capacity for further expansion to accommodate future gas requirements, including lateral pipelines to other regional centres such as Katanning, one of the initial nine Western Australian towns preparing for growth under the Regional Centres Development Plan (SuperTowns) program.

?Access to internationally competitive gas prices will drive investment in value-adding and export production, including in viticulture, agriculture, mineral processing and timber industries,? he said.

The Premier said the Government would co-fund the project through a mix of upfront capital and an ongoing subsidy. The cost of the project, and the extent of the Government?s financial contribution, would be determined as part of the tender process but early estimates were for a capital cost of $135million, inclusive of construction, reticulation and conversion of existing appliances.

Fact File

  • Bunbury to Albany gas pipeline will be about 350km long
  • Expected carrying capacity of 12 terrajoules of gas per day
  • Preferred route would service more than 100,000 South-West and Gt Southern residents
  • Preferred owner/operator to be selected by mid-2013
  • State Development will manage tendering process and work with departments, including Regional Development and Lands; and Environment and Conservation

?Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency Guidelines

FRAMINGHAM, MA ? With the possible threat of Hurricane Sandy following a track that could have a major impact on New England early next week, the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) recommends actions that people can take to minimize the potential damage from this storm.

?Early planning and preparation can be the key to your safety,? states MEMA Director Kurt Schwartz. ?It is important to use your time wisely and not wait until the last minute to ensure your family?s safety.?

Here are some examples of steps you should be taking:

Make sure you have a well-stocked Family Disaster Kit in the event you lose power or are isolated for a number of days.

  • Trim back trees and shrubbery around your home. Remove diseased or damaged tree limbs that could be blown down, causing damage, during a storm.
  • Clear clogged rain gutters. This storm brings the potential for torrential rain. Providing clear drainage will help prevent misdirected flooding.
  • Bring in outdoor items such as lawn furniture, trash barrels, hanging plants, toys and awnings that can be broken or picked up by strong winds and used as a missile.
  • Make sure storage sheds, children?s playhouses or other outbuildings are securely anchored, either to a permanent foundation or with straps and ground anchors.
  • Elevate articles in your basement that could be damaged from even minor flooding.
  • Make temporary plywood covers to protect windows and sliding doors. Drill holes for screws or lag bolts in each cover and around each window. Note: Taping of windows does not prevent them from breaking.
  • Keep you vehicles fully fuelled.
  • Have a certain amount of cash available.? If power is lost, ATMs may not be working.
  • Make a record of your personal property.? Keep an itemized list of your furniture, clothing and valuables to assist adjusters in case of a claim. Back it up with photographs or video.
  • Protect your insurance policies and other important documents in a secure place like a safe deposit box or a watertight box. Many people back up important documents online.
  • Learn where gas pilots and water mains are located and how to safely shut off all utilities.
  • Lock doors and windows to ensure that they are closed tight to help protect against strong winds and rain.
  • Boat owners, who plan on taking their vessel out of the water soon, should consider doing so this weekend.
  • Download the free?ping4alert!?app to your Smartphone to receive important weather alerts and messages from MEMA.? Easy instructions are available at?www.mass.gov/mema/mobileappp.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is the state agency responsible for coordinating federal, state, local, voluntary and private resources during emergencies and disasters in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. MEMA provides leadership to: develop plans for effective response to all hazards, disasters or threats; train emergency personnel to protect the public; provide information to the citizenry; and assist individuals, families, businesses and communities to mitigate against, prepare for, and respond to and recover from emergencies, both natural and man made. Guaranteed Rent London | Firm sounds alert on flood damage ...

Most of our landlords use our guaranteed rental income scheme. We have our own list of tenants waiting to move into properties. But just in case there is a void period, should happen, and for some reason your property should be without a tenant, we offer a rent guarantee scheme .

Guaranteed Rent LondonProperty owners across the country are suffering financial misery as home insurers hike premiums to cover the costs of ongoing flood damage, say drainage expert Drain Claim. Guaranteed Rent London

A recent BBC Watchdog programme highlighted the growing problem of home insurers increasing insurance premiums in areas with non-existent flood risks, inflating the bills of low risk homeowners to help subsidise higher risk properties. Guaranteed Rent London

It?s a familiar story at Drain Claim, which has received numerous reports from customers of insurance companies raising premiums and changing policy wording to avoid flood insurance claims.

As a result, home owners hit by flood damage are needlessly spending thousands of pounds rectifying ruined homes because they do not understand what is covered under their buildings insurance policies, while those living in non flood risk areas have become part of a postcode lottery of rising premiums across the UK.

?Inflated premiums at the point of renewal and changes in policy wording are two issues which more and more of our customers are raising with us,? said Drain Claim chief executive David Hayes.

?Such behaviour is leaving homeowners across the country in an impossible situation.

?Few will risk not having any home insurance and therefore they are being forced to pay exorbitant premiums, often when they are not even living in a flood risk area.

Guaranteed Rent London

?Equally, those whose policies previously included flood damage are finding at renewal that flood insurance has been removed or now has to be added on at extra cost as ?accidental damage?.

?This is truly unacceptable behaviour by the insurance industry and, as Watchdog highlighted, is an issue that must be addressed particularly in light of the Statement of Principles on the Provision of Flood Insurance expiring next year. Insurers and government must do everything in their power to reach agreement on a sustainable replacement for the Statement of Principles or we risk finding ourselves in an situation next year where insurers simply refuse to cover high risk properties.?

As the only FSA approved company in the UK currently to offer free, professional advice on drainage insurance claims, Drain Claim is appealing to home owners affected by the floods not to pay out for repairs unless they are 100 per cent confident they do not have adequate insurance cover.

Drain Claim?s insurance handling experts offer free, professional advice on insurance claims. Once appointed, Drain Claim represents customers and negotiates directly with insurers or their representatives.

Titan supercomputer debuts: Computer churns through more than 20,000 trillion calculations each second

ScienceDaily (Oct. 29, 2012) ? The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory has just launched a new era of scientific supercomputing with Titan, a system capable of churning through more than 20,000 trillion calculations each second -- or 20 petaflops -- by employing a family of processors called graphic processing units first created for computer gaming. Titan will be 10 times more powerful than ORNL's last world-leading system, Jaguar, while overcoming power and space limitations inherent in the previous generation of high-performance computers.

Titan, which is supported by the Department of Energy, will provide unprecedented computing power for research in energy, climate change, efficient engines, materials and other disciplines and pave the way for a wide range of achievements in science and technology.

The Cray XK7 system contains 18,688 nodes, with each holding a 16-core AMD Opteron 6274 processor and an NVIDIA Tesla K20 graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerator. Titan also has more than 700 terabytes of memory. The combination of central processing units, the traditional foundation of high-performance computers, and more recent GPUs will allow Titan to occupy the same space as its Jaguar predecessor while using only marginally more electricity.

"One challenge in supercomputers today is power consumption," said Jeff Nichols, associate laboratory director for computing and computational sciences. "Combining GPUs and CPUs in a single system requires less power than CPUs alone and is a responsible move toward lowering our carbon footprint. Titan will provide unprecedented computing power for research in energy, climate change, materials and other disciplines to enable scientific leadership."

Because they handle hundreds of calculations simultaneously, GPUs can go through many more than CPUs in a given time. By relying on its 299,008 CPU cores to guide simulations and allowing its new NVIDIA GPUs to do the heavy lifting, Titan will enable researchers to run scientific calculations with greater speed and accuracy.

"Titan will allow scientists to simulate physical systems more realistically and in far greater detail," said James Hack, director of ORNL's National Center for Computational Sciences. "The improvements in simulation fidelity will accelerate progress in a wide range of research areas such as alternative energy and energy efficiency, the identification and development of novel and useful materials and the opportunity for more advanced climate projections."

Titan will be open to select projects while ORNL and Cray work through the process for final system acceptance. The lion's share of access to Titan in the coming year will come from the Department of Energy's Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment program, better known as INCITE.

Researchers have been preparing for Titan and its hybrid architecture for the past two years, with many ready to make the most of the system on day one. Among the flagship scientific applications on Titan:

Materials Science The magnetic properties of materials hold the key to major advances in technology. The application WL-LSMS provides a nanoscale analysis of important materials such as steels, iron-nickel alloys and advanced permanent magnets that will help drive future electric motors and generators. Titan will allow researchers to improve the calculations of a material's magnetic states as they vary by temperature.

"The order-of-magnitude increase in computational power available with Titan will allow us to investigate even more realistic models with better accuracy," noted ORNL researcher and WL-LSMS developer Markus Eisenbach.

Combustion The S3D application models the underlying turbulent combustion of fuels in an internal combustion engine. This line of research is critical to the American energy economy, given that three-quarters of the fossil fuel used in the United States goes to powering cars and trucks, which produce one-quarter of the country's greenhouse gases.

Titan will allow researchers to model large-molecule hydrocarbon fuels such as the gasoline surrogate isooctane; commercially important oxygenated alcohols such as ethanol and butanol; and biofuel surrogates that blend methyl butanoate, methyl decanoate and n-heptane.

"In particular, these simulations will enable us to understand the complexities associated with strong coupling between fuel chemistry and turbulence at low preignition temperatures," noted team member Jacqueline Chen of Sandia National Laboratories. "These complexities pose challenges, but also opportunities, as the strong sensitivities to both the fuel chemistry and to the fluid flows provide multiple control options which may lead to the design of a high-efficiency, low-emission, optimally combined engine-fuel system."

Nuclear Energy Nuclear researchers use the Denovo application to, among other things, model the behavior of neutrons in a nuclear power reactor. America's aging nuclear power plants provide about a fifth of the country's electricity, and Denovo will help them extend their operating lives while ensuring safety. Titan will allow Denovo to simulate a fuel rod through one round of use in a reactor core in 13 hours; this job took 60 hours on the Jaguar system.

Climate Change The Community Atmosphere Model-Spectral Element simulates long-term global climate. Improved atmospheric modeling under Titan will help researchers better understand future air quality as well as the effect of particles suspended in the air.

Using a grid of 14-kilometer cells, the new system will be able to simulate from one to five years per day of computing time, up from the three months or so that Jaguar was able to churn through in a day.

"As scientists are asked to answer not only whether the climate is changing but where and how, the workload for global climate models must grow dramatically," noted CAM-SE team member Kate Evans of ORNL. "Titan will help us address the complexity that will be required in such models."

Windows Phone 8 review

Two years ago, the mobile landscape was quite different than what it is today. Android flagship phones sported 1GHz single-core CPUs and were in the process of upgrading to Froyo, the iPhone 4 was the Apple phone of choice and the word "phablet" was sure to be followed by a "Gesundheit." (It still is, arguably.) This is just a brief glimpse at the world in which Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 was born. Destined to be the replacement solution for an obsolete Windows Mobile 6.x platform, WP7 did its best to disrupt the industry by offering its unique Metro user interface and slick performance across the board.

There was one growing problem, however; the mobile industry was rapidly changing, and the Windows Phone honeymoon didn't last as long as Microsoft would've liked. Today, the company enjoys less than 5 percent of the world's smartphone market share as it prepares to launch its next major revision, Windows Phone 8. The new firmware promises to resolve concerns surrounding hardware limitations and the platform's ecosystem, add a plethora of long-awaited features and integrate the OS with Windows 8. It's a hefty task for Microsoft to undertake, to say the least, but we're hoping that two revolutions around the sun were enough for the software giant to impress us with its struggling mobile platform. Did it pull it off? Take a look at what makes Windows Phone 8 tick after the break.

Personal Development ? Start Now or Miss Your Better Life | Healthy ...

Webmaster | October 28, 2012 (5 hours ago) | no comments

Personal Development ? Start Now or Miss Your Better LifePersonal development is the pursuit of learning, developing, honing and mastering the skills that help you become the best that you can, with all that you have.

It is the reaching for, and realizing of your full potential as a human being.

You want to live a full, productive life, but sometimes, you just don?t know where to begin.

There is so much information ?out there? that it can be overwhelming and hard to choose what is right for you.

Depending on your concerns what seems to work for one person, may not necessarily work for you.

There are so many different ideas, strategies, advice and techniques that it?s hard to chose the right one.

One thing, however, is certain. If you want to achieve anything in your life and realise your full potential, you must have some practical and positive skills ? life skills.

In order to excel at work, in a sport or in your relationships, you must acquire and master certain skills. Living your life fully, productively and with enjoyment is no different.

Crucially possessing life skills enables you to deal with the life?s inevitable challenges and adversities more effectively. It reduces your chances of procrastinating, finding yourself getting frustrated and stressed, engaging in addictive behaviours, and experiencing overall despair and hopelessness.

When you have the proper tools and actions at your disposal, you have more control over your life and time making you happier and more confident.

Taking the first steps

Your first step is establishing a firm foundation. That foundation must be ?you?. You need to know who you are, what you want, and what you are capable of. You must then determine which values, goals and principles you will establish to guide your actions.

Learning about and applying essential life skills will help you. It will help you to:

  • know and understand yourself better
  • live life more consciously and deliberately to attain personal satisfaction and fulfilment

The hardest part in dealing with any major challenge is taking the first step, however once you do, there is a surprising positive and snowball effect. You will begin to feel good about what you?re doing and you?ll want to take further steps. You will want to keep improving yourself and to become the very best that you can be.

Your continuing journey of personal development will make you aware that there is so much more knowledge and information to be discovered, and uncovered, than you ever thought possible ? knowledge about yourself, knowledge about others, knowledge about life and the world around you.

A fantastic life experience controlled by you, if you make a start.Personal development is about wanting and pursuing new experiences, knowledge and excellent relationships. Nothing should be left out in your pursuit of finding your future self and life fulfilment.

You desire the best for you and what you want

To support you and encourage you in your pursuit of improvement and in expanding your confidence, I suggest you to read and explore every area of interest that excites you.

Read inspirational quotes, and personal development articles that include helpful tips and actions, as well as other interesting advice.

The good news is that acquiring essential life skills will not only contribute to your personal growth and development, it will make you a more interesting and dynamic individual.

Why are these new skills and experiences essential?

Without them you will always feel that something is missing in your life. What good is all the financial success in the world if you don?t have self-confidence, or know who you really are, what you want, or what you?re doing here?

We?ve all witnessed many outwardly successful and famous people who have not been able to find personal happiness. No amount of fame or fortune could fill the void they felt inside.

Your steps to achieve more of your development potential confirm that it is important to follow a plan that includes actions to:

Develop a healthy self esteem by:

  • Start from where you are right now
  • Knowing yourself
  • Learn to love yourself
  • Always be true to yourself
  • Develop a personal value system
  • Keeping an honest perspective on life
  • Keep an open mind
  • Develop and keep a sense of humour
  • Show resilience
  • Accept the reality of your situation and the world.

Use your time effectively:

  • Don?t procrastinate
  • Develop clear realistic and personal goals
  • Have a daily priority plan
  • Make time for you and your family, friends
  • Find a hobby or pastime and enjoy it
  • Work to minimise your experience of stress

Fill any idle time with useful action:

  • Make money at home ? internet ? home tasks
  • Take affordable and enjoyable holidays
  • Undertake DIY projects
  • Enjoy gardening even if it just a window box
  • Take on board a hobby that brings you in contact with others
  • Make new friends by joining local social groups
  • Start a course of learning something that you will enjoy
  • Your health is vital so do exercise, (within the limits of your current ability) diet or join a health club
  • Develop new relationships even use Dating opportunities
  • Undertake serious study to enhance your expertise and help your brain to develop
  • Develop Speed reading to open up opportunities to help others or earn extra cash

The opportunities to develop yourself fill the internet, books, advice centres and your friends.

CHOOSE THOSE THAT WILL BUILD YOUR CONFIDENCE AND MAKE YOU OPTIMISTIC ABOUT YOUR FUTURE.

Good Luck!!

What Are the Benefits Of On Line Personal Training? | Muscular ...

October 28, 2012 by admin?

?

If you want to lose weight, get in shape or improve on your overall fitness after physical therapy, there are many benefits of choosing an online fitness program over a live personal trainer or expensive gym membership to reach your fitness goals. This ?blog post will focus on the most important aspects of online fitness training and why it provides an excellent solution for maintaining your overall health and wellness.

First and foremost, online fitness training is convenient?it is accessible from your home or office at any time of day. In addition, online workouts are interactive and dynamic. If you need guidance or support, you can email the fitness program, and in most cases, receive an immediate answer to your question. Various other tools to enhance your learning and ensure your success are also available at the click of a mouse such as video demonstrations, exercise instructions, live chats and more. Today in the 21st century, there is no reason why anyone cannot take the time to get a personalized workout routine to improve their health.

According to Gary Mathews of http://www.criticalbench.com, ?Losing weight in the confines of your own home at your computer is not only possible, it?s a reality. What I mean is that (sic) you can use the advice that?s given to you through an online fitness consultation to pursue a more productive way of burning off undesired fat and reaching your fitness goals.?

Online fitness training is available at a small percentage of the cost of a personal trainer, making it an affordable alternative for a greater number of people. Further, a personal trainer can typically only offer fitness advice related to his or her individual field of expertise whereas online fitness programs offer the knowledge of numerous highly qualified professionals. An online program can also provide nutrition advice, information on injury prevention and rehabilitation, resources for answers to medical questions, motivational help and more. In addition, online fitness programs are frequently updated, and therefore, provide the latest research and information in the fitness industry.

If you are new to fitness, it is oftentimes difficult to know where to begin, and designing your own fitness program can be very frustrating and time-consuming. An online personal trainer can help you eliminate unnecessary research and confusion by teaching you the most enjoyable method for achieving the exact results you want. And the more customized and enjoyable your fitness program, the more likely you will be to stick with it and enjoy a healthier lifestyle in the long-term.

Note: Always consult with a professional health care advisor before beginning any physical fitness program.

2 killed in shrine bombing in northwest Pakistan

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Police say a bomb has exploded outside the shrine of a Sunni Muslim saint in northwestern Pakistan, killing at least two people.

Police officer Zahid Ullah says 25 people were also wounded in Sunday's attack at the shrine of Kaka Sahib in the town of Nowshehra.

He says hundreds of devotees were present there at the time.

There was no claim of responsibility but Pakistani militants have been blamed for previous similar attacks.

The militants follow a strict Taliban-style version of Islam and they claim visiting shrines is not allowed.

Nowshehra lies 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province that borders Afghanistan.

Nanotechnology helps scientists keep silver shiny

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? There are thousands of silver artifacts in museum collections around the world, and keeping them shiny is a constant challenge. So scientists are using new technology to give conservators a helping hand. A team of researchers led by Ray Phaneuf, a professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, has partnered with The Walters Art Museum in Baltimore to investigate less labor-intensive ways to protect silver artifacts from tarnishing. The new techniques, which might keep silver surfaces shiny for longer than traditional methods, could help ensure that historically important artifacts are preserved for future generations to learn from and enjoy.

The researchers will present their work at the AVS 59th International Symposium and Exhibition, held Oct. 28 -- Nov. 2, in Tampa, Fla.

Silver tarnishes when hydrogen sulfide in the air reacts with the silver, forming an unsightly black layer of silver sulfide on the surface of the artifact. If the tarnish appears on Grandma's silver flatware set, a little polisher and some elbow grease will easily remove it. But polishing, which works by dissolving or grinding away the silver-sulfide layer, can also remove some of the underlying silver, an undesirable outcome for priceless works of art.

Currently museum conservators can apply a thin layer of nitrocellulose lacquer to protect the silver. The coating is often hand-painted by a trained specialist and must be removed and reapplied an average of every thirty years. Phaneuf notes that it is difficult to apply a layer of even thickness over an entire piece, and the process of applying, removing, and reapplying the film is time-consuming.

"We did a quick back-of-the envelope calculation and found that for a big museum like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, treating their entire silver collection with nitrocellulose films would likely be a never-ending task," says Phaneuf.

A quicker conservation method is to display silver pieces in an enclosed chamber with filtered air, but the chambers often leak, are expensive to install and maintain, and putting an artifact behind glass may prevent visitors from seeing the object up-close and from multiple angles.

Phaneuf and his colleagues are investigating a technique that could overcome some of the shortcomings of current preservation methods. Called atomic layer deposition (ALD), the process gives scientists atomic-level control over the thickness of a transparent oxide film that they grow on the surface of silver objects. By running a series of surface-limited chemical reactions, researchers can build the protective film one atom-thick layer at a time. The films Phaneuf and his team have tested are under 100 nanometers thick, less than 1/1000th the thickness of a human hair.

Phaneuf and his colleagues are currently experimenting by applying ALD films to highly uniform silver test wafers. The uniformity of the wafers allows the researchers to control variables, such as the composition of the silver, in order to create a model of the tarnishing kinetics as sulfur diffuses through the ALD film.

"This is when we get to put on our physicists' hats," Phaneuf says of simplifying the test cases and building a predictive model. The test case results showed two components to the concentration profile, indicating a faster rate of sulfur diffusion through tiny pinholes in the protective oxide film. The researchers are now experimenting with multilayer films that plug these pinholes.

Before the researchers use ALD on prized museum pieces, they will need to demonstrate that the coating can be removed without damaging the artifact, and that the thin film will have a minimal effect on the aesthetic look of the silver. In terms of appearance, ALD films may have another advantage over conventional nitrocellulose lacquer, which can yellow with age. Phaneuf and his colleagues are performing tests to measure how the thickness of the ALD films affects the way silver reflects light.

"Untreated silver beautifully reflects white light," Phaneuf explains. "You don't want the protective film to create interference effects that make it look blue or yellow." The expert eyes of art conservators will also help the researchers judge their success in this respect.

Phaneuf says that collaborating museums may soon allow the team to test their methods on forgeries of silver artifacts, and by year's end the team should be working with genuine pieces. "There is no shortage of complex objects this method might be applied to," Phaneuf notes. "There is a lot of interest now in the conservation community in how nanotechnology and other high technologies can be used to preserve art."

Weak earnings reports weigh on stocks

Stocks fell on Friday after investors looked over weak corporate earnings and weak economic growth.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 24 points to 13,079 as of 1 p.m. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell six points to 1,407 and the Nasdaq composite fell 16 points to 2,969.

The market started higher after the Commerce Department estimated that the U.S. economy expanded at a 2 percent annual rate from July through September. That was better than the previous quarter, and better than analysts expected, but not strong enough to bring down the unemployment rate.

Even economic data that is mixed or positive won't outweigh weak earnings, said Lawrence Creatura, a portfolio manager with Federated Investors. Reports like the one on Friday that measure gross domestic product tend to be backwards-looking, while companies are offering forecasts about the months ahead, he said.

"Company earnings trump macro data. Because investors own Apple, they don't own GDP," Creatura said.

Apple was down $16.49 to $593.05 after saying its profit will decline this holiday season.

Friday's decline was small, but it's one slice in the death-by-a-thousand-cuts that the market's fall rally has suffered. The Dow has risen just two days out of the last seven. It and the S&P are both back to levels they had left behind in late August.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber sank 10 percent after a steep dropoff in sales in Europe delivered a blow to its earnings. Shares fell $1.23 to $11.07

The advertising conglomerate Interpublic also turned in results that fell short of analysts' forecasts, and its stock fell 3.9 percent ? down 41 cents to $10.14.

Of the 10 industry groups in the S&P 500, the only ones with gains were telecom, materials, and energy.

Among other companies making big moves, cable TV provider Comcast jumped 82 cents to $37.18 after reporting that its income more than doubled in the latest quarter. Revenue was higher than analysts were expecting, and more customers signed up for premium services like high-definition video recorders.

Varian Medical Systems jumped $8.96, or 15 percent, to $67.06, the biggest increase in the S&P 500 index. The company, which sells medical imaging equipment and radiation-emitting devices for treating tumors, reported a 20 percent rise in income because of higher sales of devices.

On its first day of trading, Dairy company WhiteWave Foods was right at its initial public offering price of $17, after rising as high as $19.17.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.75 percent from 1.82 percent on Thursday.

Stats head urges review of data access after PM comment

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's statistics authority has appealed to Prime Minister David Cameron to review rules on pre-release access to economic data, responding to a public row over whether Cameron had given an inappropriate hint on this week's strong growth numbers.

Cameron had listed a recent string of more positive news from the economy in a heated exchange with the leader of the opposition Labour Party in parliament on Wednesday, a day before third-quarter GDP figures were released.

The prime minister went on to say: "I can tell him the good news will keep coming."

A number of journalists tweeted the comments, with some saying that Cameron was hinting at strong growth figures.

On Thursday, the data from the Office for National Statistics showed that the economy grew by 1 percent on the quarter, well above economists' forecasts for 0.6 percent.

"It is clear from media reports that, although this may not have been your intent, your remarks were indeed widely interpreted as providing an indication about the GDP figures," the head of the Statistics Authority, Andrew Dilnot, wrote in his letter to Cameron.

Dilnot, whose office in the past has criticised there being so many officials on the pre-release list, argued that one weakness of the system is simply that journalists and markets know particular officials have seen the data. That makes their public comments prone to over interpretation, he said.

The office has also questioned whether officials need to see the data a full day ahead of release.

"The Statistics Authority's position on pre-release access remains clear," the head of the body, Andrew Dilnot, wrote in a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron.

"We believe that the current practices for pre-release access to official statistics are unsatisfactory," he said in the letter on the authority's website. "Since responsibility for determining the pre-release rules continues to rest with government, we would urge you to undertake a review of these arrangements."

A spokeswoman for the prime minister said on Friday Cameron had taken note of the letter, adding: "He was clear that he was not referring to GDP figures on Wednesday. As for changing the protocols regarding pre-release access (to statistics), there are no plans to change."

The pre-release Access to Official Statistics Order 2008 states that any person eligible to receive statistics must not disclose the statistics nor any "suggestion of the size or direction of any trend indicated by that statistic".

According to the pre-release access list published on the Office for National Statistics website, 34 officials, including the prime minister, the Chancellor and the governor of the Bank of England, could get the figures in advance.

The officials receive the numbers 24 hours before their scheduled release, which was at 0830 GMT in the case of the GDP figures.

CKY 4 Latest And Greatest (2003) Movie Review
Released : March 25th, 2003
Reviewed : Oct. 23rd, 2012
Genre : Comedy

Story (from IMDB) :
A difference from this CKY movie compared to the other is this one is on a rather higher budget. Throughout the duration of the film, we see the usual suspects, Bam, Bran, Ryan, Raab Himself, Rake Yohn, Art Webb 1986 and the others, jumping from moving cars, out of third story parking lot windows and all the other crazy things they could come up with. There are also the normal skating sets put in for all you boarders out there!

Review :

CKY movies were ?Jackass? before Jackass was made really. It consists of the crew from Viva La Bam in their early days doing stunts. messing around , and of course it has some skateboarding shots put in it.

Now this film has a wide mix of stuff in it. You get the stunts including barrel rolls, the shopping carts, jumping off roofs and from moving car to moving car among other. The skateboard videos and a few short videos of Mike Valley being the hulk that he is and fighting. You also get some down right disgusting stuff in here. Really what might be the standout moment of this dvd is the scene where Rabb Himself leans against a restaurant window in the middle of a busy street and then proceeds to poop all over and down the window. The shock value from the people eating are priceless as is the shot of what he actually did. That along makes the dvd.

You also get a few music videos by GnarKill! where Brandon Dicamillo shows off the fact that even when messing around he is just offbeat funny and not a bad vocalist. You get the cameos from the usual people as well like CKY and Evil Jared and Jimmy Pop from Bloodhound Gang.

Even with the low budget quality from this it still shines out as being almost nonstop laughs. If you like Jackass or any of the stars from it or the spinoffs then you will enjoy this.

Score :

7.5/10

Does co-signing a mortgage put house at risk for unpaid credit card ...

By Erica?Sandberg

Opening Credits

Erica Sandberg is a prominent personal finance authority and author of "Expecting Money: The Essential Financial Plan for New and Growing Families." She writes "Opening Credits," a weekly reader Q&A column about issues for people who are new to credit, for CreditCards.com.

Ask a question.

'Opening Credits' stories

Question for the CreditCards.com expertDear Opening Credits,
I'm being sued for credit card debt. My son's house is in both of our names because I co-signed for him in 2005. I had to go out on permanent disability in 2006. It's a debt of somewhere around $7,000. My question is can they do anything to my son's house? I don't have anything of value or any money, but, I'm just worried about his house. ? -- Cathy?

Answer for the CreditCards.com expertDear Cathy,
For cardholders, that piece of plastic comes with a hidden silver lining that goes into effect in case of emergency. Yes, you are under a contractual obligation to repay what you borrow, but if you have no way to pay (that emergency situation I just mentioned), the credit card company can have a hard time forcing you to do so.

As you now are fully aware, your creditor can sue you. If it wins the case, it may be granted the right to recoup its losses by attaching your wages or taking assets. However, if you have no income to garnish or property to claim, the consequences for being sued are not dire. There will be credit report damage, as a judgment would appear in the public records section of your report for a total of seven years. Still, your file is probably already showing missed payments and high debts, so it's already not looking so hot.

But as you fear, problems can erupt when you do have something that the judgment creditor can seize through a levy. That may be cash or things. Of course that's a positive for the lender, since it will get back at least some of what you owe.

The first thing you need to do now is inventory all of what you own and understand which of those items are at risk. You say you have nothing, but many times people have more than they think they have. Some property is considered exempt, meaning that it may remain in your possession. Exemption laws vary by state, but people who are sued for unsecured debts typically get to keep:

  • Welfare benefits
  • Supplemental Security Income
  • Social Security distributions
  • Unemployment and workers' compensation
  • Pension and retirement benefits
  • A portion of their wages
  • Clothing
  • Household goods, appliances, furniture
  • A few thousand dollars in cash for one person, about twice that for married couples
  • A vehicle (equity varies considerably by state but it's usually a few thousand dollars)
  • A home (also dependent on the state but often around $100,000)
  • Tools you might need for a business, worth up to a few thousand dollars

So what happens when you are a co-signer on a piece of property and you are sued for an unsecured debt? If the title is in both of your names, making you truly joint owners, and you have significant equity in it, then yes, it is possible for a judgment creditor to force a sale. Mind you, though, that people rarely lose their homes this way. What is more likely to happen is that a lien may be placed on the property, making the title unclear until the liability is paid.

On the other hand, if the house is in your son's name and you only helped him get the mortgage with your signature, then neither of you have anything to worry about.

Whatever the case, contact the creditor immediately to see if something can be worked out. Explain your financial circumstances and explain that you have no income to garnish nor things to take (if that's accurate, of course). After hearing you out, they may decide that suing you is a waste of time and resources.?
