US in command with 8-4 lead at Ryder Cup

MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) ? The Americans are turning the Ryder Cup into a rout.

Sparked by Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson's record-tying performance, the U.S. won all but one match Saturday morning to take a commanding 8-4 lead over Europe.

The largest comeback in Ryder Cup history was at Brookline in 1999, when the U.S. erased a 10-6 deficit on the final day.

"I keep telling the guys we're not even halfway over with this tournament so far," captain Davis Love III said. "There's a lot of points left, let's keep doing what we're doing. They're buying into it, they're playing great."

This is the largest lead the Americans have had after three sessions since the Ryder Cup expanded to include players from continental Europe in 1979. They need 14? points to win the Ryder Cup.

Europe avoided a sweep thanks to ? who else? ? Ian Poulter and Justin Rose, who beat Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 1 up. Poulter has Europe's best winning percentage in Ryder Cup play with a 10-3-0 record, and there was no way he was going to let the Americans take a point from his match.

"It was absolutely key," Poulter said. "Jose put us out No. 1 for a reason, and that's to get the point and put the point up on the board."

Just as they did Friday, the Americans got their spark from Bradley. He's got more energy and enthusiasm than a 4-year-old hopped up on Pixie Stix, sprinting out to the first hole a half-hour before his tee time to encourage fans to get louder and rowdier. Finally satisfied, he grinned and sprinted back to the locker room.

But it wasn't long before he and Lefty had the crowd worked up again. The two are on such a roll they didn't even have to putt to win their first two holes against Lee Westwood and Luke Donald on Saturday.

The Europeans conceded No. 1 when Mickelson put his second within 2 feet of the pin, and they gave the Americans No. 2 after Westwood put his tee shot in the water and missed the bogey putt.

Mickelson's gorgeous wedge set up Bradley with an 8-footer for birdie on No. 4, and he knocked it in easily, letting out a roar when the ball dropped into the cup. The Americans went 6 up when Donald saw another putt lip out on 10, and the Europeans may as well have conceded then, the result was so inevitable.

Sure enough, two holes later, Mickelson played a perfect wedge from the rough, hitting the green about 20 feet left of the pin and trickling down a slope to within a foot of the cup.

"Phil is a good partner to Keegan," Donald said. "He's obviously been a rock star this week, and they did nothing wrong."

Their 7-and-6 win, in fact, matched the mark for most lopsided score in an 18-hole team match. Two other teams have won 7 and 6, both foursomes, with Paul Azinger and Mark O'Meara in 1991 the last to do it.

The victory improved Bradley to 3-0, the best Ryder Cup start for a rookie since the guy he was playing with in 1995. And it handed Donald his second straight loss in foursomes after going unbeaten in his first six matches.

The U.S. got another big boost in the final match, Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker's 1-up victory over Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell.

The Northern Irish duo are considered Europe's top team, the No. 1 player in the world and the guy who delivered the winning point for Europe two years ago at Celtic Manor. But they've looked almost ordinary since Furyk and Snedeker forced them to grind out a victory in Friday's foursomes, and they couldn't overcome their slow start Saturday.

"We were just parring the place to death, which is not good enough in this format," McDowell said. "We just couldn't get the ball to go in the hole. Rory had a few putts in particular that burned some edges, and we just couldn't get any momentum going."

Take the last three holes. A nice iron by McDowell gave McIlroy an easy birdie putt on 16, and he made it to pare Furyk and Snedeker's lead to 1 up. But McIlroy followed that with a miss on a 15-footer that would have evened the match on 17.

McIlroy's monster drive on 18 put the Europeans in good position to scratch out a halve ? especially after Snedeker went in a bunker off the tee. But McDowell flew the green on the second shot, leaving McIlroy with a long putt from the fringe. He nearly made it, but his line was about a half-inch too far to the right and McIlroy groaned as he watched it roll on by.

When Snedeker got a 25-footer to about a foot, the Europeans conceded.

"We are in a hole," McDowell said. "These guys, there's blood in the water and they're up for it. They've got a head of steam up and we've got to try and stop it."

US temporarily reduces more staff from Libya embassy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The United States is temporarily withdrawing more staff from its embassy in Libya's capital for security reasons, but hopes to return them to Tripoli early next week, the U.S. State Department said on Thursday.

"This is a temporary further drawdown of staff for security reasons. We will review our posture again early next week with the goal of restoring staff as soon as conditions allow," a State Department official said in New York, where Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is attending the U.N. General Assembly.

The senior official declined to say how many staff were being withdrawn or discuss specifics.

U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed during what Washington has called a terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi on September 11.

Changing Landscape of SEO - WSI Internet Franchise Blog

The search engine optimization (SEO) landscape has changed drastically over the past decade.? In the early days of the Internet, search engine optimization was centered on the basic elements of web design, keyword selection, backlinks and placement.? Today, there are numerous additional factors that contribute to search engine algorithms that determine page ranking or what is called web presence.

What has happened?

Firstly, the number of web sites, pages, blog sites and social media content has increased drastically from the days of only having a few million web sites online.? Today ? millions of pages of content, blog posts and social media content are published daily on the Internet.? There is an incredible velocity of content generation daily and this will only continue to accelerate. In order for the search engines to provide quality, timely search results for users, they had to develop algorithms to sort through all of the noise.? The complexity of optimizing for organic search rankings has gone through the roof, but the underlying formula for success can be achieved through a combination of strategy, tactics, effort and long-term vision. Of course, software automation added to the process will drastically help (more on this later in the article).

Secondly, competition has escalated during this period of time.? Now,not only do we have an ever increasing volume of content but also many businesses understand the art of search engine strategy and have started spending money on optimizing their web? design and web? content.? Businesses are actively measuring their results with analytics and making changes each month and they understand the value of being found naturally or organically in the search engines.? According to an eMarketer.com survey of senior Marketing and business owners in 2008,a large percentage have added ?SEO? to their marketing budget as a separate line item.? Forrester Research surveyed 204 marketing executives in July 2009. Their research unveiled that marketing executives are expected to spend $2.8 billion on SEO services in 2010 with spending to increase year-over-year to $5 billion by 2014.

Thirdly, the entrance of social media to the search engine stage gives us even more we need to focus on.?Social media has completely transformed how people share information ? in terms of the social anthropology of storytelling (future blog post) and also in terms of how the major search engines have adapted to use social media factors in their search algorithms.? The real-time delivery of information provided by Social media, combined with the upcoming changes to search (See Google Caffeine) mean that social mentions, syndicated press releases, blog posts and even videos can rank higher than business web pages. The most interesting part is that they can rank very quickly, sometimes in minutes.? We are seeing Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook content ranking higher than business web pages!? People are also using social search results as a relevant and convenient traditional search alternative.

What does this mean to your business?

It means that business leaders need to understand the changing landscape of SEO and apply resources accordingly. In-house talent, interactive agencies and/or specialist consultants are all being hired to work manage organic search.? Did I mention before that using a software automation solution would be ideal to remove a lot of the grunt-work from researching, auditing, monitoring and improving web sites??

What other SEO trends should business owners be aware of?

Major search engines are developing relationships with social media web sites. In the summer of 2009 we saw that both Google and Bing developed closer to ties with both Facebook and Twitter.? Bing (MSN/Live) and Yahoo! recently announced a deal that they would combine their search results and that merger would result in an approximate 28% search market share with Google taking the bulk of the remaining 70%. Google and Binghoo!? (Yahoo! & Bing) are providing more real time data in their search results.? Real time content is coming from streams like social media, press releases and blog posts. As always, a large portion of Page ranking is being determined by popularity, authority and relevance of the backlinks to a piece of content (blog post, web page, etc).? These links traditionally were relatively static between two web sites, however now they are now being created much more dynamically from social media posts in Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other sites.

Local Search

Local search has become much more important in recent years as major search engines have made it easier to add local listings and in turn made it easier for users to understand that they have the option of searching locally.?Consumers are also searching more often using alternative searches such as maps (via Google Maps).? It is important that businesses understand how local search impacts their search results, especially at the macro level when considering how your results appear in different regions such as Canada versus the United States.

Web Presence

We believe that the largest issues that businesses face today? are needing to understanding the internal and external factors that make up their web presence, how to monitor these factors and then finding the time to effectively manage their web presence effectively over time.? We consider SEO, Social Media, Press Releases and Blogs as web presence optimization.? Look for a future white paper that we will publish on ?defining Web Presence Optimization?. ?How will your business communication strategy change to adapt to the ever-changing SEO landscape?

Learn more about what search engine algorithms means for your business? profitability from your local WSI Consultant.

Electrons confined inside nano-pyramids

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Quantum dots are nanostructures of semiconducting materials that behave a lot like single atoms and are very easy to produce. Given their special properties, researchers see huge potential for quantum dots in technological applications. Before this can happen, however, we need a better understanding of how the electrons "trapped" inside them behave. Dresden physicists have recently observed how electrons in individual quantum dots absorb energy and emit it again as light.

Their results were recently published in the journal Nano Letters.

Quantum dots look like miniscule pyramids. Inside each of these nano-pyramids are always only one or two electrons that essentially "feel" the constricting walls around them and are therefore tightly constrained in their mobility. Scientists from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), TU Dresden. TU Dresden and the Leibniz Institute for solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW) have now studied the special energy states of the electrons trapped inside individual quantum dots.

Sharp energy levels

The behaviour of electrons in a material essentially determines its properties. Being spatially constrained in all three spatial dimensions, electrons inside a nano-pyramid can only occupy very specific energy levels -- which is why quantum dots are also called "artificial atoms." Where these energy levels lie depends on the chemical composition of the semiconductor material as well as the size of the nano-pyramid. "These sharply defined energy levels are exploited, for example, in highly energy-efficient lasers based on quantum dots. The light is produced when an electron drops from a higher energy level into a lower one. The energy difference between the two levels determines the colour of the light," Dr. Stephan Winnerl of HZDR explains.

Seeing electrons inside individual quantum dots

The researchers in Dresden working with Dr. Winnerl were recently the first to succeed in scanning transitions between energy levels in single quantum dots using infrared light. Although, they could only do this after overcoming a certain hurdle: While the pyramids of indium arsenide or indium gallium arsenide form spontaneously during a specific mode of crystal growth, their size varies within a certain range. Studying them with infrared light, for example, one obtains blurred signals because electrons in different sized pyramids respond to different infrared energies. This is why it is so important to obtain a detailed view of the electrons trapped inside a single quantum dot.

The scientists approached this task with the special method of scanning near-field microscopy. Laser light is shone onto a metallic tip less than 100 nanometers thick, which strongly collimates the light to a hundred times smaller than the wavelength of light, which is the spatial resolution limit for "conventional" optics using lenses and mirrors. By focusing this collimated light precisely onto one pyramid, energy is donated to the electrons, thereby exciting them to a higher energy level. This energy transfer can be measured by watching the infrared light scattered from the tip in this process. While near-field microscopy involves major signal losses, the light beam is still strong enough to excite the electrons inside a nano-pyramid. The method is also so sensitive that it can create a nanoscale image in which the one or two electrons inside a quantum dot stand out in clear contrast. In this fashion, Stephan Winnerl and his colleagues from HZDR, plus physicists from TU and IFW Dresden, studied the behaviour of electrons inside a quantum dot in great detail, thereby contributing towards our understanding of them.

Infrared light from the free electron laser

The infrared light used in the experiments came from the free electron laser at HZDR. This special laser is an ideal infrared radiation source for such experiments because the energy of its light can be adjusted to precisely match the energy level inside the quantum dots. The laser also delivers such intense radiation that it more than makes up for the unavoidable losses inherent to the method.

"Next, we intend to reveal the behaviour of electrons inside quantum dots at lower temperatures," Dr. Winnerl says. "From these experiments, we hope to gain even more precise insights into the confined behavior of these electrons. In particular, we want to gain a much better understanding of how the electrons interact with one another as well as with the vibrations of the crystal lattice." Thanks to its intense laser flashes in a broad, freely selectable spectral range, the free electron laser offers ideal conditions for the method of near-field microscopy in Dresden, which benefits particularly from the close collaboration with Prof. Lukas Eng of TU Dresden in the scope of DRESDEN-concept.

American Threatens Legal Action Against Pilots ? CBS Dallas / Fort ...

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) ? American Airlines has sent a letter to the Allied Pilots Association, threatening legal action if the company is forced to continue cancellations due to an increase in pilot sick calls and maintenance requests.

The airline would not disclose the entire letter sent to the pilots union, but released a statement about it, which reads: ?We do not want to pursue a legal remedy, but we will be left with little alternative if APA does not take action to stop those pilots who are intentionally harming the operation. American?s operations have continued to suffer for more than a week now, and we must take the appropriate steps to ensure our customers and our airline are protected.?

It goes on to say, ?The recent conduct by some of our pilots is inflicting economic damage on the company, frustrating and alienating our customers, and driving unnecessary work and significant stress for other employees. Our goal remains for all of us to put this recent behavior behind us and turn to the critical task of operating a more efficient, competitive airline in the interests of all economic stakeholders, including our pilots, and begin the joint task of finding common ground for a new pilot agreement.?

American has blamed the pilots for intentionally causing a slow down in operations, while the pilots union denies any organized effort to impact operations.

Last week, American apologized to its customers and announced it would be proactively cancelling up to two percent of its flights through October.

Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the Allied Pilots Board of Directors met to reaffirm their decision to enter new contract talks with American. They spent about five hours behind closed doors to strategize for those sessions. They?ll meet again all day Thursday and Friday.

A source in the Allied Pilots Association tells CBS 11 that American Airline?s new letter to the union threatening legal action will hurt efforts to re-engage in contract negotiations.

It was Monday of this week when American told the union it wanted to re-engage in those talks.

The pilots union is in the process of asking its members to vote to go on strike.? That ends next Wednesday, Octover 3rd.

While the pilots can?t legally strike, it would certainly continue to draw another line in the sand.

Finally, today the airline confirmed that nearly 16-hundred maintenance employees will accept its ?early out? offer.

Because that number is so high, American says it will substantially reduce the number of forced losses. The airline isn?t sure what the final number of losses will be, but said most of the moves will start in December.

Have you ever wondered how many water molecules it takes to form the crystal beginnings of every ice cube and snowflake? Until recently researchers weren?t quite sure. But we now know the answer: 275.?

But how did they get such a precise number? Water absorbs light at one frequency, ice crystals at another. By using a few tricks to control the number of molecules, the scientists examined the response of tiny clusters of water molecules to infrared light at sub-freezing temperatures?and slowly increased the number of molecules until they saw a change.? When the number of molecules reached 275?bingo?the clusters began absorbing light like ice crystals. At 475 molecules the crystal is completely formed. The study is in the journal Science. [Christoph C. Pradzynski et al., A Fully Size-Resolved Perspective on the Crystallization of Water Clusters]

The research creates the first-ever picture of how ice crystals are gradually formed from water. Researchers say their method can be adapted for use with many other types of molecules and may potentially be used to look at a variety of chemical reactions between the interfaces of liquids, gases or solids?at the individual molecular level.

NBC News photographer Jim Seida spent a day shooting stills?with the iPhone 5, along with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, the new Samsung?Galaxy S III and a high-end point-and-shoot from Nikon, the P7000. The results? While the iPhone 5's 8-megapixel camera performed well, it did not noticeably?outperform its most recent forebear. But there was one way that the iPhone 5 clearly?bested the 4S.

The key to the test was that Seida didn't use any special apps, just the native camera mode, and the only manipulation he did was to tap the same spot on the screen each time, to focus the camera and determine the exposure.

By?comparing low-light portraits of Seida's colleague, you can see a slight reduction in noise compared to the 4S, but the picture itself is a tad?underexposed, too.

While noise was also not a problem for the Samsung Galaxy S III's 8-megapixel camera, it did lag in detail (and also appeared somewhat dim).

Outdoors, Seida challenged the phone-cams with high color contrasts and an abundance of light. The only noticeable difference between the iPhone 5 and 4S was background detail, which could be explained away by multiple factors. (Besides, having a slightly blurred background is generally preferred.)

The Galaxy struggled a bit with exposure ? towards the top, the meter is?too washed out.

The results aren't surprising.?One of the biggest leaps for the iPhone 4S was its camera ? just look at how the iPhone 4 did in the above experiments, paying special attention to the noise in the low-light shot and the over-saturation in the outdoor shot.?Meanwhile, the specs on the iPhone 5's camera never suggested a quantum leap forward.?

But Apple has promoted its camera as improved ? going so far as to say that the new A6 chip has an image signal processor that can deliver more brightness to a picture, up to two full stops. In our real-world and controlled testing, we have not seen any significant difference.?

Consumer Reports had similarly unspectacular results in its comparison test of the iPhone 5 and 4S cameras.?Though usability is better, due to the phone's overall?faster performance and bigger screen, outdoor shooting showed a?"modest step up," yet "the claimed improvements of the iPhone 5 in handling low-light shots were not apparent in our tests."

When it comes to the front-facing camera, however, the difference doesn't require expertise to spot. The FaceTime camera on the 4S supports?"VGA-quality photos and video" in the 640x480 resolution, while the new one on the 5 brings 720p HD-quality video and 1.2-megapixel stills. Seida's self-portrait shows just?what that means:

Register to Vote for Internet Freedom

Would the fight for Internet freedom get you to vote? That's the hope of a new voter registration drive labeled "Internet Votes."

[More from Mashable: Watch Dan Rather Report the (Twitter) News]

Launched today, the initiative has been organized by the Center For Rights and Fight For The Future. The two non-partisan advocacy groups organized some of the protests against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) as well as the Internet Defense League.

With this new initiative they hope to make Internet freedom a more prominent issue in this year's presidential election. Through InternetVotes.org you can quickly register to vote and the website also provides code to include a widget on your website to get more people to register. The website also encourages netizens to use the hashtag #internetvotes.

[More from Mashable: The Digital Smackdown: Obama 2008 vs. Obama 2012]

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a digital rights advocacy group, featured the initiative in a Monday night blog post titled "Stop the Next SOPA and CISPA: Register to Vote for Internet Freedom." In a phone interview with Mashable, the author of the blog post, Trevor Timm, said that people showed how much they care at the beginning of the year with the massive protests against SOPA. Also, according to him, if either party really came out with a strong stance on consumer rights regarding personal data protection, "they could really get somewhere with voters."

In the post Timm suggests that by voting and supporting Internet freedom netizens could get to help pass key legislation. The EFF activists highlighted three key issues.

First, patent reform. Rep. DeFazio proposed a bill that "would fix much of the broken patent system that is engulfing giant tech companies in billion dollar patent suits and paralyzing up-and-coming companies with legal costs," wrote Timm.

The second issue is email privacy. As it stands right now, emails don't enjoy 4th Amendment protections like regular mail. That means that law-enforcement agencies don't need a warrant to access your electronic conversations. Currently both the House and the Senate are discussing bills to reform the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986. In the Senate the fix was proposed by Sen. Patrick Leahy and is attached to the reform of the old Video Privacy Protection Act. If approved, it would require law-enforcement agencies to obtain a search warrant to obtain data stored in the cloud, including emails. This change would be in accordance with a federal appeals court that ruled in 2010 that emails should indeed be protected.

Recently, senators decided to delay discussion on the proposal after the National Sheriff's Association asked to reconsider "until a more comprehensive review of its impact on law enforcement investigations is conducted."

Lastly, Timm referred to the GPS Act, which would force police to obtain a warrant to get cellphone location data. Noting that authorities demanded cellphone users' information more than 1.3 million times last year, Timm thinks that your smartphone is "one of the most privacy invasive tools out there," and accessing your geo-location data should be protected by the 4th amendment.

Personal Democracy Media announced its collaboration in the initiative on Sept. 19, with a blog post penned by Micah Sifry on TechPresident. Referring to a new study that shows Facebook can increase voter turnout, Sifry underlined the power of social media and the importance of voting. "If you're an Internet user," he wrote, "you're already pretty familiar with the need to register to use your favorite websites. And you're also probably voting pretty often on those sites, by rating things or upvoting links. So why not make sure you're registered to vote on the most important site of all ? your polling place on Election Day?"

After the January 18 protests against the two controversial bills that made Wikipedia blackout and Google put a black banner on its logo, Internet freedom has never been as popular as it is now. Both Democrats and Republicans have included calls for freedom online in their platforms.

It's unclear what this commitment to Internet freedom will actually mean and what particular policies the two parties support. "I think the wording it's vague for a reason," Timm told Mashable. For him, both parties wanted to capitalize on citizen's concerns, but "they are not specific enough for voters."

With the Internet Votes initiative, online freedom advocates hope to change that.

Do you think Internet freedom is an important issue in the presidential election? Are you going to vote with that in mind? Tell us in the comments.

From Nigeria to Athens, Muslim protests rumble on

DUBAI (Reuters) - Muslims protested in Nigeria, Iran, Greece and Turkey on Sunday to show anti-Western anger against a film and cartoons insulting Islam had not dissipated.

As delegates from around the world gathered in New York for a U.N. General Assembly where the clash between free speech and blasphemy is bound to be raised, U.S. flags were once again burning in parts of the Muslim world.

Iranian students chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" outside the French embassy in Tehran in protest at the decision by satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo to publish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, days after widespread protests - some deadly - against a film made in the United States.

Shi'ite Muslims in the Nigerian town of Katsina burned U.S., French and Israeli flags and a religious leader called for protests to continue until the makers of the film and cartoons are punished.

In Pakistan, where fifteen people were killed in protests on Friday, a government minister has offered $100,000 to anyone who kills the maker of the short, amateurish video "The Innocence of Muslims". Calls have increased for a U.N. measure outlawing insults to Islam and blasphemy in general.

In Athens, some protesters hurled bottles of water, stones and shoes at police who responded with teargas. Calm returned when demonstrators interrupted the protest to pray.

Hours later, dozens of Muslim inmates in Athens' main prison set mattresses and bed sheets on fire in protest. Firemen with four engines battled the flames in some cells but police and government officials said late at night the situation was under control.

ON ALERT

Protests around the world were relatively small and calm, but Western embassies remained on alert after the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in one of the first protests, on September 11.

The upsurge of Muslim anger - just weeks before U.S. elections - have confronted President Barack Obama with a setback yet in his efforts to keep the "Arab Spring" revolutions from fuelling a new wave of anti-Americanism.

In U.S. ally Turkey, a secular Muslim state often seen as a bridge between the Islamic world and the West, protesters set fire to U.S. and Israeli flags on Sunday.

"May the hands that touch Mohammad break," chanted some 200 protesters before peacefully dispersing.

"We will certainly not allow uncontrolled protests, but we will not just grin and bear it when Islam's prophet is insulted," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told party members at the weekend.

"The protests in the Muslim world must be measured, and the West should show a determined stance against Islamophobia."
